There was a sort of symmetry, based on reactions to differing understandings of freedom, in entrances and exits from the two parties’ 1964 conventions. The Young Americans for Freedom and their ideological allies had taken over the San Francisco convention, and as candidate Goldwater came out in favor of extremism in his acceptance speech, forty members of the New York delegation walked out of the Cow Palace, presumably to back the Democratic nominee.64 Six weeks later, the Freedom Democratic Party and its supporters held their “walk-in” at the Democrats’ Atlantic City convention and took the vacant seats reserved for the Mississippi delegation, after which almost all the regular Mississippi delegates declined to sign a pledge to support President Johnson and left the convention hall to back the Republican nominee.

The issue that had been present since the first Reconstruction was drawn again in 1964: Would the South be remade in the image of the nation, or would the nation be remade in the image of the South? From that year onward, the Democratic Party would be associated with the former effort and the Republican Party was moving toward association with the latter.
